Title
Late medieval/early post-medieval purse frame
Description
English: A worn cast copper-alloy fragment: part of the frame of a late medieval or early post-medieval purse. The object is V-shaped in cross-section until it narrows into a solid element at the extant terminal. This terminal loop would have hung around the end of the purse bar. Along the inner side of the V-shaped element is are two small circular perforations, one of which is broken through. It would have been through these holes that the frame was sewn to the fabric purse (Geake 2001, 43). On the solid outer side there are traces of incised double, diagonal lines decorating the frame in which traces of niello are evident. Between the triangles thus created are short lines of rockerarm decoration. A comparable fragment, probably from a Ward Perkins Type A1 frame, can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 130; ref. 907). This fragment has corroded to a mid-green colour with patches of off-white corrosion product, particularly on the internal surface. The plain side of the outer surface is covered in file marks.
