Title
Late Medieval to Post Medieval: Purse frame
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy purse frame, dating to the Late Medieval to Post Medieval period (AD 1400 - 1600).

The purse bar is a Williams Class A1 Type. The remains of the purse bar consist of a nearly complete L-shaped in cross section purse bar frame arm, with three circular sewing holes. The outer surface of the frame bar is incised with a triple-strand lattice pattern. The bar (and L shaped section) tapers to a point at one end, where the suspension loop (now missing) would have been, and appears to be broken at the other end. The purse bar is a mid green in colour and has an even surface patina. Abrasion whilst in the plough soil has resulted in the loss of some of the surface detail.

The purse bar frame is curved and measures 85.9 mm approximate length, 9 mm wide, 4.3 mm thick and weighs 17.2 grams.

Other examples of this type can be found on the PAS database records SUR-5CD912 and SUSS-80C935.
