Title
Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval: Incomplete Class A1 purse frame
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy frame from a purse bar, of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (c. AD 1450 to AD 1550).

Around 5-10% of the purse frame is present. The rest is missing, presumed lost in antiquity.

The purse frame is L shaped in cross section and curved in shape. Three circular holes are present on one side, with an internal diameter of 1.7 mm. The top surface exhibits recessed decoration consisting of a repeating circular design.

It measures 54.3 mm in length, 7.5 mm wide and 6.0 mm thick. It weighs 9.2 g.

The purse frame is a mid to dark green to brown colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Several similar purse frame fragments have been recorded on the PAS database, including: SF-F84CE0; PUBLIC-005611; LEIC-97C312; LIN-6FAEE6 and SF-A1A952. Williams comments that L shaped purse frames are commonly associated with Class A1 purse bars (long bars with attached frames) and should be considered to date from c. AD 1450 to c. AD 1550.
