English: Portrait bust of Lafayette Sabine Foster (1806-1880), President Pro Tempore of the Senate, bald and bearded and dressed in classical drape by Charles Calverley, marble, 1879. Administered by United States Senate, Washington, District of Columbia. Note: Sculptor Charles Calverley of Albany, New York, created the bust in 1879, several years before Foster’s death. Lafayette Foster’s widow presented it to the U.S. Senate in 1885. The bust was formally accepted by Senate resolution dated February 19, 1885. It was temporarily displayed in the Senate Chamber adjacent to the presiding officer’s chair. It was permanently mounted on a marble, wall-hung pedestal for display in the Vice President’s Room of the Capitol. U.S. |
