| Description |
Entrance gate of the 1867 Paris World Fair at the Pont d'Iéna. The 1867 Fair was the second one to take place under the Second Empire, and Napoléon III was very involved in the project. The Iéna bridge (behind the entrance gate on this picture) had been built under Napoléon I in 1807, and was named after one of his military victories. It was therefore a powerful symbol for the Second Empire. The bridge is located between the Champ-de-Mars (where now stands the Eiffel Tower, and where the main parts of the 1867 World Fair were located) and the right bank of the Seine river. |
