Title
La fête du 15 Aoüt 1867 sur le Trocadéro
Description
The fifteenth of August had been declared a national holiday by Napoléon I. The date coincided with his birthday, and with the signature of the "concordat," whereby the Pope agreed to grant legitimacy to the Emperor. The "Saint-Napoléon" day, as it was called, disappeared during the Restauration and the July Monarchy, but Napoléon III instaured it back. This print shows the events on the fifteenth of August at the Paris World Fair. On the same day, the Emperor and Empress inaugurated the newly built Opéra Garnier.
