Cet animal de la famille des Équidés tient son nom du premier spécimen, offert en 1882 à Jules Grévy, Président de la République française par Ménélik II, roi de Choa. Celui-ci en fit don à la ménagerie du Jardin des plantes, où il décéda au bout de quelques jours. Il fut naturalisé au Muséum national d'histoire naturelle. Il fut nommé par Milne Edwards. Originaire d'Afrique orientale, c'est un herbivore qui affectionne tout particulièrement la savane. Il se différencie du zèbre de Chapman par une robe élégante aux rayures très fines. C'est aujourd'hui une espèce menacée. |
