Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Looking south along L'Enfant Promenade at Benjamin Banneker Park in Washington, D.C., in the United States. The park, completed in 1971, is built atop a partial traffic circle and overlooks Maine Avenue SW and the Potomac River. In this image, a teenage male is skateboarding on the conical concrete monument which forms the center of the park and overlook. The park, L'Enfant Plaza, and L'Enfant Promenade were designed by I. M. Pei for developer William Zeckendorf in the early 1960s. Pei originally intended for a huge pedestrian bridge to descend down to the waterfront. Stores and restaurants would line either side of the bridge, connecting L'Enfant Plaza to the river. This monumental bridge, which would be a modern version of the Ponte Vecchio (in Florence, Italy), was never built. Banneker Park was completed in 1971.
