[edit]DescriptionLEnfant Plaza Promenade - looking south at Benjamin Banneker Park - Plaza buildings left and right.JPG |
English: Looking south along L'Enfant Promenade at Benjamin Banneker Park in Washington, D.C., in the United States. The park, completed in 1971, is built atop a partial traffic circle and overlooks Maine Avenue SW and the Potomac River. The building to the left is the South Building of L'Enfant Plaza. The building to the right is the West Building, now the headquarters of the United States Postal Service.
The park, L'Enfant Plaza, and L'Enfant Promenade were designed by I. M. Pei for developer William Zeckendorf in the early 1960s. Pei originally intended for a huge pedestrian bridge to descend down to the waterfront. Stores and restaurants would line either side of the bridge, connecting L'Enfant Plaza to the river. This monumental bridge, which would be a modern version of the Ponte Vecchio (in Florence, Italy), was never built. The South Building was designed by Pei's partner, Araldo Cossutta, and constructed in the late 1960s. The West Building was designed by Vlastimil Koubek, and constructed in 1969. |
