Summary

[edit]
Description Knockin Castle, Shropshire, watercolour painting by Thomas Farmer Dukes, before 1841. NB: dubious identification, Knockin Castle was demolished before the 16th century. Leland in about 1540 described it as "a ruinous thing". Text per www.ecastles.co.uk: "A motte and bailey constructed in 1150 and then rebilt in stone in the early 13th century. It was in ruins by the 16th century and the stone was taken for nearby buildings leaving only the motte visible." (per www.ecastles.co.uk [1]). The site is to the immediate east of St Mary's Church, Knockin.

Author

Thomas Farmer Dukes (d.1850). Text from: www.shropshirearchives.org [4]

Thomas Farmer Dukes was born at Bridgnorth, he practiced law in Shrewsbury and married Elizabeth Ashdown there in July 1811. In 1814 he was elected a member of the Corporation of Shrewsbury, an alderman in 1828, and served as Mayor in 1831. He devoted his leisure time to antiquarian research. In an obituary written by his fellow local historian, Henry Pidgeon, he was said to have “exercised great diligence in transcribing ancient deeds, charters, and other documents relating to his native county”. He also made “drawings of churches, monastic remains and other objects of interest”. He revised and expanded “Antiquities of Shropshire” compiled by Edward Lloyd with examples from his own collection and those of the nobility and clergy of the county. His death in 1850 at the age of 78, was “awfully sudden”, being in usual health at breakfast but found dead sitting in his chair by a servant by 2.00pm. In March the following year, his extensive library of books, prints and paintings was advertised for auction from his home at Windsor Place, Shrewsbury. Over 4000 volumes were offered for sale over five days.
