Summary[edit]
DescriptionKing Charles Street - geograph.org.uk - 134811.jpg |
English: King Charles Street. Looking north towards the Headrow from a window in the staircase of the Headrow Centre car park.
It may seem a pity that an insignificant side street is named after royalty, but there is good reason. The Headrow Centre on the right stands on the site of Red Hall, built in 1628. In 1647 King Charles I was held captive in Red Hall, then owned by Alderman Thomas Metcalfe. An attempt was made to help him to escape by John Harrison (who smuggled gold coins to him) and Metcalfe's servant Mrs Crosby who offered him a disguise of women's clothes. He declined the offer, but gave Mrs Crosby a garter. When his son Charles II was restored to the throne, Mrs Crosby told him the story and showed the garter. As a result, her husband, who was a bailiff in Leeds, was promoted to be High Bailiff of York, and they built a fine house on the Headrow with the wealth that followed. |
