Summary[edit]

Description
English: The KeyBank branch at 4467 Main Street (corner Harlem Road) in Amherst, New York, as seen on an August 2022 afternoon. Built in 1929, this is a fine example of the simplified Colonial Revival style that was then commonly employed in the construction of small- to mid-scale commercial and institutional buildings such as this: the flat roof and boxy proportions presage the Modernism that would come to the forefront of the architectural scene in a few decades, but the smart red brick exterior, shuttered windows, projecting cornice and parapet - and particularly the entrance, with its arched fanlight, engaged Corinthian columns, and parapet - are where the requisite Classical influences come into play. The addition at right dates to the 1950s. The building was initially constructed as home office of the Bank of Snyder, which had been founded just a few months previously by a consortium of residents of the then-rapidly suburbanizing hamlet and had at the time a capitalization of $100,000. The bank weathered the early years of the Great Depression well enough but was acquired in 1934 by the Marine Trust Company of the neighboring city of Buffalo, whose corporate successor continues operating its Snyder Branch in the building today.
