Title
KENT-C90BE3. Early Medieval silver finger-ring. Drawn by D. Andrews.
Description
English: Finger ring formed from a single length of round-sectioned silver wire. The two ends of the wire are brought together to form a spiral bezel, the terminals being wrapped around the body of the ring either side of the bezel. Rings of this type occur in Anglo-Saxon burials of the 6th century AD, with most belonging to the latter half of the century. When found the ring was flattened into an oval shape, 24.69mm by 12.42mm. The wire is 1.25mm thick, and the spiral bezel measures 10.18mm by 6.70mm.

Angela Care Evans report:

Silver finger-ring with flat twisted wire bezel. The hoop is made of silver wire with a rounded section and the bezel made by twisting the ends of the hoop into a flattened spiral and wrapping the ends around the shoulders.

This ring from Thurnham belongs to a group of sliver slip-knot rings which were in use in the early Anglo-Saxon period. It may be compared to similar rings, also made in silver, published by McGregor and Bolick, particularly examples from Chatham Lines, Kent and St Albans Hertfordshire (Arthur McGregor and Ellen Bolick, 'A Summary Catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon Collections', BAR British Series 230, Oxford 1993, Cat. nos. 27.18 and 27.19).
