KENT-473EF3: Early Medieval siler finger ring
Description
English: Silver 'slip-knot' ring made of square-section wire (of side less than 0.5 mm). The ring is made from a doubled length of wire with three knots, one larger in the centre flanked by two smaller ones. The ring is now bent out of shape, and is oval.

Dimensions: The ring measures 21 mm wide externally and 18 mm from the central knot to the back of the ring. The large central knot brings its thickness up to 6 mm.

Discussion:

This finger-ring is similar to KENT-697734 (2013T52) which was found through metal analysis to be made from sterling silver and therefore of modern date. Although superficially similar early-medieval examples do exist (e.g. KENT-C90BE3; 2004 T299), these have a single hoop of circular-section wire and a simpler construction.

Date: The square-section wire suggests machine manufacture. The double hoop and complex bezel also suggest a modern date. Compare ESS-4C0457.
