Portrait of Alessandro Farnese
Description
L'identificazione del personaggio con Cosimo III (Chiarini 1969) o con suo figlio Ferdinando (Langedijk 1983) non è stata accettata dalla Meloni (1985), che ha invece individuato nel ritrattato il giovane Alessandro Farnese, figlio di Margherita de' Medici e Odoardo Farnese. Il dipinto deve infatti essere identificato con quello registrato nell'inventario del 1692 della Villa di Poggio Imperiale e descritto come ' ritratto di un principino'. Sulla base di questa indicazione inventariale la Meloni esclude che possa trattarsi di un esponente di casa Medici, poichè sarebbe stato individuato con sicurezza dagli estensori del suddetto inventario. Sempre la Meloni ha messo questo ritratto in relazione con altri due (conservati nei depositi di Pitti) raffiguranti un fratello e una sorella di Alessandro Farnese, Ranuccio (Inv. 1890, 2200) e Maria Maddalena (Inv. 1890, 2208). Suttermans, come si evince da fonti documentarie (Meloni 1985 e Goldenberg Stoppato 1986) eseguì infatti i ritratti di quattro degli otto figli di Margherita de' Medici ed Odoardo Farnese nel corso del soggiorno parmense, tra la fine del 1639 e il 1640. I tre ritratti dei 'fanciulli farnese', di cui fa parte quello in esame, sono quindi da identificare con quelli inviati a Firenze da Margherita de' Medici al fratello Ferdinando II nel 1640 (Chiarini 2003)
