The city does not own the system,but it controls it in every detail of operation and improve-ment, and the rate of fare, adjusted by sliding scale, in-sures the owners of the property proper return on theirinvestment, and the car riders service at cost. Cleveland is the center of the paving brick industry forthe United States, and, as a result, it is the center of oneof the best paved sections in the United States. Cleveland,with its municipal suburbs, has more than six hundredmiles of brick pavement. Cuyahoga county, which is knowninternationally as the best paved rural section in the world,has used brick almost exclusively. Its automobile drivesare a delight. was a notable increase in religious activity and the stimu-lation of many movements for civic betterment. In matters of education Clevelands equipment is of thebest. There are 110 grade schools in the city, twelve highschools of which three are technical, nine junior highschools and fifty-seven parochial schools. Cleveland is theseat of Case School of Applied Science, of Western Ee-serve University (including the College for Women) and ofSt. Ignatius college. Case alone offers courses in civil, me-chanical, electrical, mining, metallurgical and chemicalengineering and in physics. Western Reserve includes schools of medicine, law anddentistry and pharmacy, and courses in education and Ap-plied Social Science. St. Ignatius confers degrees inphilosophy, language, history, science and mathematics. 132 THE JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY
