"Ce tableau est à rapprocher d'un Portrait de la duchesse de Chevreuse gravé au burin chez Jean Leblond, dont un exemplaire est conservé à la Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Fig. 1). Peintre ordinaire de Louis XIII, Jean Leblond est surtout connu comme l'un des grands éditeurs d'estampes en taille-douce de la première moitié du XVIIème siècle parisien. Son oeuvre en tant que peintre reste en revanche encore mal connu et commence à peine à être redécouvert (voir M. Préaud, 'L'inventaire après décès de Jean Ier Leblond', Nouvelles de l'Estampe, mai-juillet 2002, no. 182, pp. 19-36). Il semblerait qu'il ait surtout réalisé des portraits de femmes de la haute société, lesquels ont très probablement servi de modèle à ses publications gravées. Célèbre pour son goût de l'intrigue politique et sa tumultueuse vie amoureuse, la duchesse de Chevreuse (1600-1679) est l'un des personnages les plus flamboyants du XVIIème siècle. Fille de Hercule de Rohan, duc de Montbazon, elle épousa en 1617 Charles d'Albert de Luynes puis, en secondes noces en 1622, Claude de Lorraine, duc de Chevreuse. Sa vie, digne d'un roman, n'est faite que de conspirations et complots, notamment contre Louis XIII, Richelieu et Mazarin. Grande figure de la Fronde, elle partit dix-huit ans en exil avant de se retirer au couvent de Gagny. Nous remercions Monsieur Maxime Préaud pour son aide apportée à la connaissance de cet artiste et les informations qu'il nous a communiquées. Monsieur Préaud considère que l'attribution du tableau à Jean Leblond est probable mais, en se fondant sur certaines différences entre le tableau et la gravure ci-dessus mentionnée, a en revanche émis des doutes quant à l'identité du modèle représenté."
