Summary[edit]

Description

Canada's national parks were developed in conjunction with the opening of the transcontinental railroad. Trains were the primary means by which visitors from far away, especially eastern Canada, tended to arrive in these remote parts.

Today, Jasper is still a key stop for VIA Rail Canada's transcontinental trains, and the old station building continues to be in use. This contrasts with Banff, which no longer is served by transcontinental passenger trains.

As evidenced here, every federal installation sign in Canada is required to be bilingual, in English and French. Here in Alberta, French speakers are even fewer than speakers of various immigrant languages, but I did spot plenty of Quebecers (as evidenced by car license plates), more than enough to justify strict adherence to bilingual signage. For that matter, park employees are also required to greet visitors in both English and French, until it becomes clear which language the visitor prefers to speak.
