Summary[edit]
DescriptionJan de Wit (anno 1917) Geklonken ijzeren schip gebouwd als Parlevinker voor bij de Zuiderzeewerken.jpg |
English: The motor vessel 'Jan de Wit' was built at the shipyard 'Van Dam' by order of Mr. K. Stellingwerf from Harlingen. This was in 1917.
Mr Stellingwerf wanted to sail as a Parlevinker between the mainland (Harlingen, Den Oever, Makkum, etc.), the work islands and dredgers. He transported men and small equipment in addition to commestiblen (bread, vegetables, milk, butter and eggs). In the late 1930s, the ship switched from work ship to pleasure ship. Before the ship was sunk during WWII so that it remained out of the hands of the Nazis, Mr. Stellingwerf and his son sailed a few more times between Friesland and Amsterdam to transport potatoes to starving Amsterdam. He did this because a sister of his had a grocery store in town, and she couldn't get potatoes and stuff. These were dangerous trips. |
