nquiet sea. Fortunately, there are currents whichmay hinder such a drift, and among them is the necessityof co-operation between England, France and Italy inNorth Africa. For the present a cordial co-operation maybe hampered by the suspicion of France and England whichinspires Italian opinion ; and it rests in the main withEngland to remove that suspicion. The long tradition offriendship between England and Italy has surely enteredtoo deeply into the minds of most Englishmen and mostItalians to be permanently broken by the misapprehen-sions that arise so readily in time of war. But the tradi-tional confidence will only be renewed if England canrealise more fully the progress that has enabled Italy toclaim her place among the nations. The men who aremoulding the Italy of to-morrow feel with some justicethat Italian aims and Italian achievements have not beenrightly appreciated in England; and we shall best dispelthe lingering clouds if to the old sympathy we can add anew understanding.
