Summary[edit]

Description
English: Prototype of a receipt for "500 romanaţi", issued by a Casa de credit reciproc ("Mutual Credit House"). This is imaginary coinage, proposed by the author as a mutual credit alternative to the Romanian leu. The project is mapped out in Heliade's extensive philosophical inquiry, which stretches between neo-Gnostic cosmology and the minutiae of a radical economic model. As Heliade explains (loc. cit., p.331), the romanaţi name is a calque of the French term francs - under the (mistaken) assumption that francs reflects an ethnonym. He opts for romanaţi instead of români ("Romanians") to avoid inappropriate use: s'a dat o sută de români pe un bou ("one has exchanged 100 Romanians for one ox").
The cooperative system defined therein by Heliade takes its inspiration from utopian socialists and anarchists such as Fourier and Proudhon. He calls them profeţi şi martiri ai redemţiunii comerciale ("prophets and martyrs of commercial liberation", loc. cit, p.269).
