Description |
English: Indian Mutiny 1857-1859 The grave of Lieutenant General Sir Henry Havelock-Allan VC at Rawalpindi, India. Havelock was born in Cawnpore, and was the son of Lt (later Major General Sir) Henry Havelock and his wife, Hannah ne Marshman. He was 26 years old, and a Lieutenant in the 10th Regiment of Foot during the Indian Mutiny when on 16 July 1857 at Cawnpore, the 64th Regiment had suffered badly under artillery fire. When the enemy was seen rallying their last 24-pounder, the order was given to advance, and Lieutenant Havelock immediately placed himself, on his horse, in front of the centre of the 64th, opposite the muzzle of the gun and moved on at a foot pace, in the face of shot and grape fired by the enemy. The advance went steadily on, led by the lieutenant and finally the gun was rushed and taken by the 64th. For this deed, Havelock was awarded the Victoria Cross. In 1858 Havelock was granted the baronetcy originally intended for his father (who died a year earlier during the Siege of Lucknow). Havelock later went to England, serving as a Member of Parliament for Sunderland during 1874 - 1881. After inheriting Blackwell Grange, the former property of his cousin Robert Allan, he changed his surname to Havelock-Allan and served as MP for Southeast Durham during 1885 - 1892. In 1895 Havelock-Allan returned to his military career and joined the Royal Irish Regiment stationed in India. It was here that he was killed by Afridi clansmen on the Afghanistan side of the Khyber Pass in 1897. He was buried in Rawalpindi, India. |

Licensing[edit]
This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
