Text Appearing Before Image: ent roadway ona fiat street. ROLLING THE EARTH ROADBED. For any method of road-making or of paving whichmay be adopted, a steam roller of about ten to twelve lO ROLI.INCr THK KARTII K( )AI)l,i;i). tons weight is requisite in order to compact the eartliroadbed so that it will sustain the wheels which willpass over it. As well try to make the bricks of oldEgypt without straw as to try to make the roads ofto-day without a heavy steam roller. Every fullyequipped road-builder has one or more. There are fewcities which have not made some effective efforts tohave good roads, and those which have done so knowfrom experience that no good results can be expecteduntil the proper tools are used. For any system ofpavements or of roads, a steam roller is the thing firstneeded, and no contractors bid should be consideredunless he agrees to provide and use a steam roller ofat least ten tons weight so proportioned as to give notless than 500 pounds pressure per lineal inch of face ofthe roller-wheels.

Text Appearing After Image: The undulations and hollows which may be seen inthe surface of many existing pavements are the directresults of the lack of a proper roller which would first 11 CITY ROADS AND PAVEMENTS. have disclosed the presence of the soft places in theearth roadbed, and then would have packed the grad-ing-material into them, so that the finished pavementwould have had a solid and peniianent foundation anda regular surface. GOOD EFFECT OF ROLLER OX DIRT ROADS. Especially valuable would such a roller be for citiesha\dng great extent of dirt roads, which could be fonnedby use of the wheeled scraper and then rolled to asmooth, hard surface, furnishing fine roadwavs duringthe summer months until the fall rains make themmuddy. By rolling the roads as thev freeze, towns canmake their earth streets smooth for the whole ^\interand so that a few inches of snow will give goodsleighing. Nearly a mile per day of temporary, summer road-wav can be made at small cost by a scraper, sprinkler, and steam roller work
