Katherine Mansfield, born Katherine Mansfield Beauchamp on 14 October 1888, was an internationally acclaimed New Zealand author who revolutionised 20th-century English short-story writing. Her life and work have inspired biographies, radio and television programs, plays, operatic works and films. In December 1917 Mansfield developed pleurisy and was diagnosed as having a spot on the lung. Although she did not believe that she was seriously ill, she was dispirited by her poor health and British wartime restrictions. She nevertheless completed some significant stories, including 'Bliss', a cleverly satirical story first published in ‘The English Review’. ‘Bliss’ is set during a single day of the story’s main protagonist, Bertha. It opens with Bertha experiencing a sense of rapture as she reflects on her life, which later turns to disappointment and resignation as she discovers that her husband is having a love affair with her friend. Covering themes of modernity, change, ignorance, love and deceit, ‘Bliss’ secured Mansfield’s literary reputation, and still resonates with readers today. You can read it in full here: www.katherinemansfieldsociety.org/assets/KM-Stories/BLISS... This is a curious sketch of a scene from ‘Bliss’ by New Zealand war artist, Duncan McPhee. It was drawn in 1944 and archived in the National Collection of War Art, before being returned to the artist.
