Description |
English: Qur'an from Mamluk Cairo. This manuscript contains Juz' 27 of the Qur'an, and it was originally one of a thirty-volume set of the complete text. The opening folios present an illuminated double page, with matching panels of radial geometric design. The central octagons read "The Twenty-Seventh Juz'", in angular white kufic script. Set against gold ground, four lines of smaller text frame these central panels, with a Qur'anic quotation: "Truly this [Qur'an] is a revelation, From the Lord of the worlds, Which the true Spirit has brought down upon your heart, That you may be one of the warners, In clear Arabic language" (Qur'an 26:192-5). Illumination and calligraphy attributed to Ahmad ibn Kamal ibn Yahya al-Ansari al-Mutatabbib (unsigned), Cairo, Egypt, c. 1332-1336. Chester Beatty Library Is 1476, ff.1v-2r |
