Summary[edit]

Description
English: Original captions: Western: "Fig. 8. "View of Trunk Conduit Under Construction." and inscribed on bottom of photo, "9182 Illinois Telephone and Telegraph Co. (illegible) Trunk System - Franklin & Washington Sts." Pages: "Fig. 5. VIEW OF TRUNK CONDUIT UNDER CONSTRUCTION." This image is a composite of both published versions in order to reduce artifacts from scanning and printing. Trunk tunnels were 14 feet high by 12 3/4 feet wide. The photo does not show the actual street intersection suggested in the title, but the system map in Western, Fig. 17, suggests that this section of trunk tunnel is near the base of Construction Shaft No. 3 on Franklin. Since the shaft entrance is not in view, the camera must be facing north toward the street intersection.
