Miniature Iconostasis / Private Collection, Germany The icon, painted in fine detail, reproduces in miniature the icon screen that separates the nave from the sanctuary in the orthodox church. The icon is divided in six registers, The lower register is centred by the Royal Door, with two more doors depicting deacons to the left and to the right. Between the doors, large icons are depicted, showing the Synaxis of the Archangels, St Nicholas, the Pokrov of the Mother of God, the Trinity, the Beheading of St John the Forerunner and the Dormition. The second row depicting fourteen icons with the most important feasts of the orthodox church, the third row depicting the Deesis, centred by Christ Enthroned, the fourth row depicting the prophets, holding open text scrolls in their hands en praying to the Mother of God Enthroned in the centre, the fifth row depicting more prophets and forefathers, also holding text scrolls and with God Father in the centre, the sixth row depicting saints and scenes from the Passion of Christ. |
