Title
IOW-5EFEB7 Medieval to Post-Medieval Purse Frame
Description
English: A fragment of a Medieval to post-Medieval cast copper-alloy purse frame (c. 1450-c. 1525).

This small portion of frame is 'L'-shaped in cross-section and curved in side profile. One outer face is decorated with double zigzag grooves. There are two small flecks of niello surviving in the grooves. The other outer face is plain and has minor file marks.
The outer faces have a shiny mid to dark green patina with scratch marks that are also patinated. There are patinated file marks on the decorated face. The inner face has a slightly darker coarse and pitted patina. Each break is old.
45.9 x 7.2 x 5.1mm. Weight: 5.58g.

This frame is probably from a Type A1 purse, dating from the late 15th to early 16th century (Ward-Perkins 1940: 162-167).
