I flew over this odd-looking place a few times en route to/from the USA's west coast and in 2013 took this photo. Since then I've been greatly intrigued as to what it was. A road? An airfield? But why stop suddenly at a precipice? Only very recently thanks to Google Earth and internet searches I've found out what it was and thought some other people may be interested. This place is Hurricane Mesa, in Utah and is where mock-ups of military fast jet cockpits were accelerated down a track to supersonic speeds, and near the end, ejection seats were tested. The dummy and seat were projected over the side of the mesa and parachuted as much as 1,500 feet into the lower ground below (all going well !). This went on mainly in the 1950's and 1960's until the Air Force apparently stopped operating there. As far as I can establish since the 1960's tests have continued, on and off, by aerospace companies but unsurprisingly not much is said about their activities. It would not be possible to keep supersonic activities secret but outside the local area the place seems to have kept a low profile even though it can clearly be seen from the air. |
