Summary[edit]
DescriptionHuntly to Glenbrook coal train (35756097220).jpg |
On this day 13 August in 1984 New Zealand’s longest coal train ran between the mine at Huntly and Glenbrook steel mill. The train was pulled by two 2600 horsepower locomotives and consisted of 28 C and CA wagons carrying 1300 tonnes of coal. The train, which was 483 metres long, took just over an hour to make the trip, at 80 kph. At that time 12,000 tonnes of coal per week was moved from Huntly to Glenbrook. This test trip, using a train double the usual length, was designed to uncover any operational problems. The new CA wagons were much faster to unload, as they could be opened up to empty out the coal. The special projects engineer announced that the test was most satisfactory.
