Several pleasant mornings, similar to that one,were passed at Lucsivna during our stay, whichgenerally ended round a fire in some glade amongthe woods, when we toasted bacon and mushroomsand the beaters their pipes. Strange as it may seem, the charm of that kindof shooting is largely to be found in the long waitswhich occur after one has been placed and beforeany game is likely to be seen. Alone in lovelysurroundings in complete stillness, and forced toremain almost motionless, one observes. It maybe the exquisite edge of a mountain, or the exactrelation of its distant purple to a turquoise sky,or the clouds, or the trees, or any of a thousandthings, on which the mind, undirected, will dwell.It may be but a twig in the foreground, whichcompels admiration by the beauty of its growth,the delicate attachment of its leaves, or the subtlevariety of its colours ; but something there alwaysis to study and enjoy—a pod bursts open in the THE CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS FROMLUCSIVNA-FURDO

VAZSECZ AND LUCSIVNA-FURDO 95 sun ; far above, an eagle with outstretched wingssweeps in wide circles out of sight. The sound of distant horn and hound havingcalled to attention, the faintest cracking of branchor rustle of leaves is keenly noticed, and thenperhaps there is a shot, far off, to excite curiosity,followed soon after by others. If nothing hascome ones way one hopes for better luck nexttime, and—when the signal is given—in a spirit ofgood-fellowship joins the assembled guns near analready crackling fire. For us the chief attractions in the neighbourhoodof Lucsivna-flirdo were the pretty village ofMenguszfalva and its most amiable people, thesilver-birch woods, and the towering mountainsbeyond them. One morning we received the pleasant news thatthe Prelate proposed to pay a short visit to Lucsivnafor a day or two, and great was our joy when hestepped from the train and walked up with usthrough the woods to the rooms prepared for him.
