But in either case it was thethought, straight out from himself in all the heat of kin-dled imagination, that he set upon the paper, or struckout with forceful action of the tool. He used to say that he had sucked the desire to be asculptor from his foster-mother, the wife of a stone-cutter; and in his later life, when sore oppressed, hewould retreat to the marble-quarries of Carrara undercolor of searching for material. To him each block ofmarble, rugged, hard, and jagged, held a secret, needingonly the genius of his chisel to liberate it; and in thesame way his own soul was imprisoned in a personalityeternally at odds with the world, that to the seven popeswhom he successively served during his long life ofeighty-nine years seemed very hard and unyielding.
