name if he would not let GovernorPerkins know that he was the man whose sen-tence he had commuted, and who had promisedhim he would in the future live an honest life,stating that this he had done for eight years andwould have continued until the end had it notbeen for bad associates and strong drink. In Oroville, Cal., in 1864, Mr. Perkins wasunited in marriage with Miss Ruth A. Parker,a native of Cork, and the daughter of an Englishofficer in the excise service. Four daughtersand three sons blessed the union of Mr. and Mrs.Perkins. It was while living in Oroville that Mr. Per-kins united with the Masonic order. In the bluelodge he served in nearly all the offices fromjunior deacon to master, later was elected tosome of the highest offices of the grand lodge ofthe state and was chosen most worshipful grandmaster of the grand lodge of Free and AcceptedMasons of California. While the grand conclaveof 1883 was in session he was elected grand com-mander of the Grand Commandery of Knights

He is also a member of the military orderof the Loyal Legion of the United States (Cali-fornia Commandery), his election being a recog-nition of services rendered during the war. The home of Mr. Perkins is located at VernonHeights, in Oakland, where he is surrounded byall that comfort can suggest, tempered with acharacteristic simplicity. Those who know himbest, the representatives of the younger gener-ation as well as those who, like him, have spentmany years in useful operations in California,freely accord him a place among the public-spirited and kind hearted citizens of the state;and in him they find a man whose support of allworthy movements calculated to enhance thecommercial, industrial and social standing of thecommonwealth comes from entirely unselfishmotrves. That he is one of the public-spiritedcitizens
