Summary[edit]

Description
English: This illustrates how the Korean alphabet's characters are grouped to form blocks.
Every block begins with a single or double consonant character or an ieung character (ㅇ). This part is called ‘lead’. Blocks may additionally end in a consonant ‘trail’. Both ‘lead’ and ‘trail’ are blue in this illustration.
Vowel characters and what is romanized as y(+vowel) and w(+vowel) are respresented by red. The ‘consonant’/‘vowel’ labels are in Turkish. Examples for each type:
Top row from left to right:
뾰 = lead ㅃ + vowel ㅛ
뼈 = lead ㅃ + vowel ㅕ
묶 = lead ㅁ + vowel ㅜ + trail ㄲ
깎 = lead ㄲ + vowel ㅏ + trail ㄲ

Bottom row from left to right:
맑 = lead ㅁ + vowel ㅏ + trail ㄹ + ㄱ
왔 = lead ㅇ + vowels ㅗ + ㅏ + trail ㅆ
꽤 = lead ㄲ + vowels ㅗ + ㅐ

It should be noted that the illustration is inconsistent. It distinguishes between types 4 (single or double trail) and 5 (combined trail), but does not show that horizontal stacks (type 3) also have a combined trail version, for example:
몫 = lead ㅁ + vowel ㅗ + trail ㄱ + ㅅ or
옮 = lead ㅇ + vowel ㅗ + trail ㄹ + ㅁ
