| Description |
English: This photo was taken at one of London's largest protests in many years as tens of thousands set off from the Embankment, across Trafalgar Square and then down Piccadilly for a mass gathering at Hyde Park. The trigger for mass protests on this Saturday as well as the previous weekend, was Israel's 11 day assault on Gaza, killing over 200 Palestinians, including over 50 children. That has just ended less than 48 hours earlier in a ceasefire.
Demonstrators also demanded access for all Palestinians to the Al Aqsa Mosque (the third holiest site in Islam which has been repeatedly blocked by Israeli security forces) and an end to forced evictions across Jerusalem (particularly Sheikh Jarrah) and the West Bank as well as an end to the Israeli blockade of Gaza which has been inflicting immense suffering on the entire population. They also pointed out that Israel continued to defy international law and were denying any access for Amnesty International into Gaza. |
