Description
English: Gus Strateges, an 11-year-old celery vendor at the Center Market (demolished; current site of National Archives building) in Washington, D.C., is photographed while working at 10:30 p.m on a Saturday night. His family immigrated to the United States in 1910 and were living at 212 Jackson Hall Alley (demolished; was located between Pennsylvania Avenue, John Marshall Place, Third, and C Streets, NW). Although Gus didn't leave Center Market until 11 p.m., he had to be up early the next morning to sell newspapers and gum. 10:30 P.M. At Center Market. 11 yr. old Celery Vendor Gus Strateges, 212 Jackson Hall Alley. He sold until 11 P.M. and was out again Sunday morning selling papers and gum. Has been in this country only a year and a half. Location: [Washington (D.C.), District of Columbia]
