find in the case of mountainsand valleys in a map, every variety of shape may occur in a fingerpattern. The ridges (rugae) and the valleys or grooves (sulci) whichlie alongside of the former are by no means confined to the fingers,as we have seen. In fig. 3 there are represented diagrams of a number of thosecurious elements into which finger-prints may be analysed, but noattempt has been made to exhaust the list, which might easily beexpanded into a great many pages. By applying the principle ofpermutations it may readily be judged that just as chemical forcescombine a few kinds of atoms into the immense variety of compositesubstances that occur in nature so biological laws induce in the ridgesof skin endless combinations of those simpler elements. It is to beremembered, however, that imprinted lines from skin vary somewhatin thickness and are irregularly dotted over with the openings of theperspiratory ducts or sweat tubes which give a most characteristicappearance to finger-prints.
