ATLANTA, Ga., May 26, 2011 – Members and leaders of the Georgia National Guard were among the more than 100 present today at a ceremony held in the state capitol’s North Rotunda to pay tribute to all those who have given their lives in the service to the country – especially to those Georgians who made the ultimate sacrifice, past and present. Here, Maj. Gen. Maria L. Britt (second from the left), Georgia Army Guard Commander; Mike Fowler, Georgia’s Deputy Adjutant General; Letha Nesbitt and her husband Maj. Gen. William T. Nesbitt, Georgia’s Adjutant General, listen intently to Gov. Nathan Deal’s opening remarks. Stepping to the podium, Gov. Nathan Deal, his wife Sandra seated nearby, said the state and the nation owe those who lost their lives in the defense of freedom the deepest respect and gratitude. Even more than that, he added, the fallen are “owed our allegiance to the principles for which they gave their lives: freedom, Justice and equality.” Deal’s remarks were followed a short time later by Marine Corps Reserve Lt. Col. Kevin Jarrard –commandant of Riverside Military School and Marine Forces North liaison to the Federal Emergency Management Agency – who was the keynote speaker for today’s ceremony. Before the ceremony ended, the names of 22 Georgia service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan between May 27, 2010, and today were read aloud by Maj. Blair Davis, chaplain to Marietta's 78th Homeland Response Force. Afterward, “Taps” was played in honor of Georgia’s fallen by Spc. Matt Hansen of the 3rd Infantry Division Brass Quintet from Fort Stewart in Hinesville, Ga. |
