Text Appearing Before Image:
esh bloom of budding womanhood; andthey come to you not so much as paintedpictures as delicate visions breathed oncanvas from which they might at anymoment tremble into pulsing life. Yet the Greuze to whom we owe thisexquisite series was first known as thepainter of pictures of a very different kind. Before speaking of these let us begin at thebeginning, by seeing when and under whatconditions the child who was to become thepoet-painter of a certain type of woman-hood first saw the world he was destinedto enrich. At theusual early age, however, the childs vocationdeclared itself. It was in vain the father, alarmed by symptoms that threatened to dis-arrange his plans, took materials from himand then whipped him for making picturesall over the walls—anywhere, everjrwhere. The boy cared for nothing but drawing of akind that did not fall in with the cherishedarchitectural idea, and after many struggles i6 GREUZE he won the day by giving his fath
