| Description |
English: Captioned "Grave at Fort Wrangell". A Tlingit log mortuary house with wolf totem. Two people (women, possibly mourners) are in front of the structure and a raven or other large bird flies overhead. The original sketch or photograph from which this engraving was made was probably by Scidmore, 1883 or 1884. According to Scidmore's preface, this illustration first appeared in Harper's Weekly, August 30, 1884. This illustration makes the structure and sculpture look larger than the original that inspired it; for a photograph of that structure establishing scale, see [1]. Author's name on the publication was given as E. Ruhamah Scidmore. |
