DescriptionGlacier-scratched soapstone deposit (6954117172).jpg |
Continental glaciation used this large serpentinite formation as a 2000 ft long scratching post. This is an untouched massive-sized carvingstone deposit of Proterozoic age near the headwaters of the Kingora River, western side of Melville Peninsula, Nunavut, Canada. View looks west or down-ice across a width of 125 feet that can be up to 25 feet high. The north-south trending formation extends for 1000 feet to the right and 1000 feet to the left from this central spot. Which translates to a million tons (tonnes) or more of fair to good quality green stone with excellent quality black and grey sections seen at the south end. Without infrastructure and 75 to 80 miles inland from the nearest carvers, the stone will have to be gathered one komatiq- or sled-load at a time. Hall Beach (Sanirajuk) and Igloolik are the nearest communities. North end at 68 degrees 38 minutes 34.8 seconds North, 84 degrees 16 minutes 57.4 seconds West South end at 68 degrees 38 minutes 52.6 seconds North, 84 degrees 16 minutes 55.5 seconds West 2010-2013 Nunavut Carvingstone Deposit Evaluation Program |
