| Description |
English: President Harry S. Truman would often hop aboard the Presidential yacht, the USS Williamsburg, to "get away from it all.'" In this cartoon, Clifford Berryman asserts that late in 1948, Truman was particularly trying to escape Edward Martin, Robert A. Taft, Thomas E. Dewey, and Charles Abraham Halleck, his potential opponents in the Presidential election of 1948. The President rarely did work on the Williamsburg, a fact he did not hide from the public. His favorite activity aboard was playing poker, and making his guests "pony up" five hundred dollars to enter the game. Frequently important political figures such as Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Fred Vinson came along to play. |
