e dynamos in the Equitable building inNew York, then one of the finest buildings inthe city. The methods employed here, thatof connecting the dynamos in pairs runningin opposite directions, and furnishing currentto the same mains, was severely criticised asbeing thoroughly impracticable. It, however,proved to be a great success, and the dynamoson the Brooklyn Bridge were later connectedin the same manner, thus demonstrating thatMr. Barnes ideas were along the right lines.He later installed the plants and wired fivesteamboats at Cincinnati, Ohio. Also theplant of the Hall Safe and Lock Company, atCincinnati, and the Cincinnati & SouthernRailroad Companys repair shops, at Ludlow,Kentucky, and several other large plants of asimilar nature. He remained with this com-pany until 1884. He later returned to Bridge-port to take charge of the fire-alarm system ofthat city. Barnes is a member ofSt. Johns Lodge, No. 3, Free and AcceptedMasons, of Bridgeport; P. P. of Orient Chap-ter, No. I, of Bridgeport; P. R. P. of MorrisCourt, No. 4, Order of Amaranth; P. G. R. P.of Connecticut in this organization, and amember of the Supreme Council. He is alsoa member of Sons of the American Revolu-tion, and has made a considerable study of theearly families of the state and enjoys corre-spondence with descendants of these families.He is also a member of the PhotographersClub of Bridgeport. He married, August 29, 1869, Elizabeth,daughter of Edward Ormisher, who was for-merly connected with the Gas Co
