Description
English: Friar Street, Reading. North side, c. 1896. Much of the property in the photograph is empty and boarded up, and plastered with election posters saying "The ballot is absolutely secret. Vote for Murdoch." No. 44 (with a sign for the Royal County Depository on the side: part of the Depositor is visible); Nos. 43 and 42 (the walling is a mixture of rubble and dressed stone); No. 41 (formerly John Cox, umbrella maker); No. 40; No. 39 (F. C. Emberton, chemist, who appears still to be in business. Two figures, one with a barrow, stand on the pavement. 1890-1899 : photograph by Walton Adams.
