Title
Fragment of a post-medieval probable purse frame
Description
English: Fragment of a post-medieval L-sectioned object, probably a purse frame. One unbroken end is flat rather than L-sectioned, and is partly round-edged with an attachment hole. Over the remaining length there are four attachment holes in the upright of the L. A rivet in a hole through the horizontal arm secures a narrow strip, the other end of which is broken acress a second hole which passes through the strip and the horizontal arm. Extant length 43mm. This is very similar to a much more complete example from an 11th- or 12th-century context in Exeter which was considered "rather early" for such a piece, though intrusive pottery was not found. (Goodall, A.R. in Allan 1984, 345-6, fig. 194, no. 18). Three similar pieces, all from Norfolk, have been dated to the 17th - 18th century, NMS-741F90, NMS-9FF617 and NMS-390334. One other fragment, broadly comparable but of a slightly different form and found in Buckinghamshire, was dated to the post-medieval period (BUC-966291).
