English: Louvre Museum. Marble. 46 BC. Found at Cyzicus (Anatolia). On the left, a young man and a person who would be a priestess of Cybele are moving forward toward a tree from which two small bells are suspended. In front of the tree, a servant leads a ram to the altar. Behind the altar is a veiled woman with a flat basket covered in linen on her head. The inscription states that the priestess of Cybele is thanking the goddess, who appeared to her in a dream to reassure her about the fate of her friend who had been taken prisoner but was freed at the battle of Thapsos in 46 BC. Choiseul-Gouffier Collection. Purchased in 1818. Entry number LL 117. Usual number MA 2850.
Français : Musée du Louvre. Marbre. 46 av. J.-C. Trouvé à Cyzique (Turquie). A gauche, s'avancent un jeune homme et une personne qui serait une prêtresse de Cybèle vers un arbre auquel sont suspendues deux clochettes. Devant l'arbre, un serviteur conduit un bélier à l'autel. Derrière l'autel, une femmme voilée portant sur la tête un corbeille plate recouverte de linge. L'inscription indique que la prêtresse de Cybèle remercie la déesse qui lui est apparue en songe pour la rassurer sur le sort de son ami fait prisonnier mais libéré lors de la bataille navale de Thapsos en 46 av. J.-C. Collection Choiseul-Gouffier. Achat en 1818. Numéro d'entrée LL 117. N° usuel MA 2850. |
