In einer von zahlreichen Wesen bevölkerten Landschaft sitzt der Heilige Antonius betend in einer Baumhöhle und widersteht dabei den verschiedenen Versuchungen der Aussenwelt, die ihm von teuflischen Wesen vorgeführt werden. Die dargebotenen Gaben und Kostbarkeiten sollen den Heiligen vor seiner freiwilligen Armut abbringen, die junge freizügige Frau unten links von seiner Keuschheit. Der Anführer des links aus der Erde hervor kriechenden Teufelszuges attackiert stellvertretend für den Heiligen sein Attribut, das Antoniusschwein. Das hier angebotene Gemälde geht auf eine Komposition aus Antwerpen um 1530 zurück (siehe Unverfehrt, Gerd: Hieronymus Bosch. Die Rezeption seiner Kunst im frühen 16. Jahrhundert, Berlin 1980, Kat.
