Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Alanson Follansbee Block (1867) at 331 Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, designed by E. Townsend Mix. The building was remodeled by the Birchard family in 1899, removing the original French Second Empire mansard roof (one is still in place on the neighboring building to the west), rebuilding the fourth story in brick and stone, and adding a fifth story with an Italianate bracketed cornice. The building has housed the Johnson Bank since 2000.

In 1870 (according to an old stereoscope photo) Birchard (Burchard) Furniture was housed in this building. That stereo photo shows it with a mansard roof and elaborate window trim. Previously Birchard Furniture was on Spring and West Water in another building designed by E.T. Mix but it burned in 1866. (Source: Milwaukee Sentinel:May 1, 1860 and Sept 22,1860.) That land was later leased to John Plankinton for the Plankinton Hotel, also designed by Mix.

The Wisconsin Historical Society online has a copy of the 1870 stereoscope showing the Birchard Furniture Store.(E.L.P)
