Summary[edit]

Description
English: Flame structures in Waitemata Sandstone, exposed on an intertidal rock platform between Long Bay and Granny's Bay, Auckland, New Zealand. The longest of the "flames" is about 2 cm in length. Contrast has been enhanced.
Waitemata Sandstone consists of alternating layers of sandstone and mudstone, deposited in a submarine basin between 15 and 20 million years ago. Here a light coloured band of sandstone overlies a darker mudstone layer. As the sandstone pressed down on the mudstone, water escaped upwards along with some of the mud to form the flame structures seen here at the boundary between the two layers.
