Summary[edit]

Description

Fossil fish bone in the Devonian of Kentucky, USA.

This is a piece of fossil fish bone - it is probably derived from a placoderm, an extinct group of mostly predatory, jawed fish (exemplified by Dunkleosteus - www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/33974292562). The fossil was found in the basal Chattanooga Shale, a unit of dark-colored, chippy-weathering, marine mudshales of Late Devonian age. These black shales were deposited in a moderately deep, anoxic seafloor environment. This was a widespread lithofacies during the Late Devonian's Global Anoxia Event. The Chattanooga Shale is equivalent to the Ohio Shale, the Antrim Shale, and the New Albany Shale in surrounding states.

The bluish coloration covering part of the bone is vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O - hydrous iron phosphate).
